電影看完了以後，叫我們討論了一陣子的對白是Prince Don Fabrizio Salina 說的：
We were the leopards, the lions, those who take our place will be jackals and sheep, and the whole lot of us - leopards, lions, jackals and sheep - will continue to think ourselves the salt of the earth.
Salt of the earth 是什麼意思？不同的解釋有好幾個。通常解釋成平凡的好人。聖經裡用過 （Matthew 5:13, 14, 15 and 16）大概是指儘本分的信徒 （我沒有讀過聖經，請指正）。salt of the earth 也是一部 1954 電影的名字，也是 neorealist 的電影，爭論性極強，McCarthy 時代被禁。2014 又有另外一部不同的電影叫The salt of the earth （加了 The)。
電影裡 Prince Salina 說我們 aristocracies， 是指他的家族和同黨 （leopards and lions）；他們 revolutionaries， 是指要改變政權的人 （ jackals and sheep）。我們和他們 是完全不同的人，為什麼 Prince Salina 要說這四種人都認為自己是 salt of the earth 呢？我猜想 Prince Salina 說的是，這四種人雖然看起來不同，可是都認為他們自己都儘力扮演好了他們自己的角色。角色不同，但是命運總會把他們綁在一起。
好電影叫人回味的地方往往是對人物性格的描述。有的人，性格多變，不容易演好的地方在要把變的過程演的合情合理；有的人，性格如一，不容易演好的地方在要把不變的背後演的有高有低。《The Leopard》做到了。Tancredi Falconeri 一夜之間，從富家子弟，看到義軍日盛，加入 Garibaldi's redshirts，幾個月後，勝負易位，他又以保皇新貴出現，在和新貴嬌女Angelica 熱戀之際，對舊時女伴Concetta冷言冷語，最後在新政府出任要職。 Prince Salina 在新舊勢力交替之際，他也看到了大勢所趨，他也知道他能在新世界裡有一番作為，但是他只能鼓勵Tancredi Falconeri，自己走到幕後。
我始終沒有找到電影裡明示 leopard 和 lion 的區別。只能從我們自己的文化裡想，好像leopard （豹） 比lion （獅子） 狡猾。如果真是這樣，那Tancredi Falconeri 是豹， Prince Salina 羨慕豹，可是沒有豹的耐，Concetta 看出來Tancredi Falconeri 是豹，只能嘆息；Angelica 也看出來Tancredi Falconeri 是豹，可是她覺得她有辦法馴豹。 （附言：大多數的英文書評，都用Leopard來標示 Prince Salina和他的家族。）
電影裡，Tancredi Falconeri有一句更有名的道白：If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change. 和一句漢語名言有一點像：識時務者為俊傑。

》》"The Leopard - a Novel" by Giuseppe di Lampedusa 確實是本大大有名的書。最近在旅遊雜誌上讀到一篇 Sicily 專訪文章也提到此書。電影背景描繪的情節大致上有歷史根據，主角人物自然為虛構，但多半也有原型為藍本。據說 Prince Salina 之角色是依據 Lampudusa 的祖父（也是貴族）塑造的。

Bendicò?
In the "book": "Angelica's first visit to the Prince and his family following her betrothal to Tancredi. Dressed beautifully, she makes her entrance with perfect timing, and immediately endears herself to the Prince. Only Bendicò, growling in a corner, seems unhappy to see her. "
"Concetta retires to her bedroom, where she keeps several locked boxes of decaying mementos of her past, including the skin of her father's dog Bendicò, which had been made into a rug and which is now completely moth-eaten."
"Concetta returns to her room, and contemplates her possessions there with new perspective. Even the few relics which she once cherished are now only reminders of a life unfulfilled. She also realizes that an unpleasant smell is coming from what remains of the Bendicò rug, and orders it thrown out."
注一：Bendicò，在書評中被認為是一個極重要的角色。從 prince 的忠狗，到死後成為地毯標本，到數十年後，「臭皮囊」被 Concetta 當垃圾丟棄。她丟棄的其實是包括她家族的一切「狗皮倒灶」。這的確是作者神來之筆，之一。
6. Why lion and sheep?
是有關聖經嗎？有 salt of the earth ，就不會驚訝 lion and sheep. 但也有疑點。
注二：羅馬、教皇/教宗是義大利統一的最後「障礙」，如何與教皇/教宗（甚至是全世界的天主教徒）保持「良好關係」對義大利是極重要的。處於君權、民主、宗教三相俱變時刻，羅馬教廷問題足足延後義大利的統一至少二十年。
注三：原著以人（prince 、及其家族），狗 （直覺、忠心、到後來變成臭皮囊的醜陋象徵），lion and sheep，作者是想小心跨越那些紅線？
注四：若涉及宗教/聖經，為什麼不用 lion and lamb，不用 lamb 而用 sheep ? 作者想表達什麼、又想隱藏什麼？
注五：Sicily 原著提到"Don Calogero's father-in-law vowed revenge, but his corpse was later found, shot twelve times in the back." 有版本寫成 "shot nine times in the back".
不論九次或十二次，無疑地在十九世紀黑手黨就已經活躍在在西西里島。這也許可以解釋為什麼原著作者和電影導演都有意無意的碰觸ㄧ些也保留一些。這些隱晦秘密把原著和電影更添加浪漫神秘色彩。

》》兩位論述各有千秋，看電影多年真還沒見識到如此認真的人！我也讀了 Michael Wood 寫的短評。誠如兄所說，就中關鍵在：雖然是同一故事，書和電影處理方式卻各有招式，絕對是出自大宗師手筆。書我無緣一睹，電影卻看了三回。我想說的是：書是好書，電影也妙。雖然不少後敍的劇情發展殘缺（沒交待 Prince Salina， Tancredi 等人的結局）就電影的形式來説，或者更完美的詮釋了這段國族家族史。
我覺得電影並不曾叛離 Lampedusa 原著的精神。基本上兩位作者都出身沒落貴族世家，南北相距雖遙，經歷卻相當接近。 Weikong 兄之評價：「難得的是有志ㄧ同把義大利的史地人文宗教精華刻劃詳細。是史詩級的名山之作。」頗有同感。
更難得的是為拍攝本片Visconti 所投注的心力，加上個人藝術造詣及對完美及 Authenticity 之執著，讓這部影片幾乎成為廣陵絕響。自他以後，再也沒第二個人能拍出肉眼能瞧見世紀末的奢華，主人翁高貴優雅及𥈠智之形象。

有機會看到許多好友的想法，真是太過癮了，最後加幾句：
我正好看到一篇 Princeton 的 Michael Wood 寫的影評，說是附在Criterion Collection’s 2004 DVD edition of The Leopard 上。文章公不公允我不敢說，至少我學了一些新東西，我還沒有看這本書。
原來 Visconti 開始構思 這部電影的時候，Lampedusa 的書還沒有出版，兩人經常交流看法。1958 小說出版，1963 電影發行。IMDB 很小心，例出 Novel 和 screen play 的名字，沒有用 原著 和 adapted 之類的字。
Lampedusa 和 Visconti 兩人都有貴族身份：Lampedusa 出身於Sicily，不看好未來的演變，可是了解不能只緬懷於過去。；Visconti 出身於義大利北方，雖獻身於明日的遠景，卻也知道 未來可能困難重重。
小說和電影都大力描述了 Tancredi 和 Angelica 結婚之前的歡悅之前，可是小說裡不時透露出一些他們婚後蕭條生活的暗示， 電影裡我們沒有看到。據說 拍電影的時候，Visconti 一直在問這種機會主義的 Tancredi 有朝一日，得勢了，會不會成為獨裁者？Visconti 不知道，也不想知道，更怕知道，因為他 知道，像 Tancredi 這一類的人太多了。Visconti 在電影裡沒有拍這個問題，因為他知道，有人看了他的電影，會想這個問題。
我上封信說 “ 這種機會主義的 Tancredi 有朝一日，得勢了，會不會成為獨裁者？” 原文用的是 fascist。 我用了 獨裁者，殊為不妥。Fascism
